Expanding Access to Fresh Produce for Pediatric Patients in Need

La Red Health Center, in collaboration with Dittmar Family Farms, has launched the Produce Prescription Program aimed at providing fresh produce to pediatric patients who face food insecurity. Serving nearly 14,000 patients across its three offices in Milford, Georgetown, and Seaford, La Red caters to a population where approximately 99% live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Dr. Marisel Santiago, Director of La Red’s Pediatric Department, highlights the unique challenges faced by this population. Many of them do not have a secure food source and face difficulty accessing government assistance due to their status. In addition, transportation barriers and a lack of awareness about the location of Food Banks further compound their struggles.

To address this issue, the Produce Prescription Program delivers 20 boxes of fresh produce to La Red’s three offices every week. Pediatricians assess their patients and distribute the produce boxes to those exhibiting the highest level of need. The program is currently funded through a $15,000 grant from Delaware’s Division of Public Health, which will come to an end on May 31st.

Dr. Santiago emphasizes the success of the program in its initial two weeks but expresses concerns about its continuation. The demand for the program is especially high during the summer months when many children rely on school as their primary source of food.

Recognizing the importance of ongoing support, La Red is actively seeking additional funding and partnerships to expand and extend the program beyond its initial funding period. The aim is to ensure that pediatric patients facing food insecurity have continued access to fresh produce, promoting their health and well-being.

By addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and working collaboratively, the Produce Prescription Program strives to improve access to nutritious food and support the holistic health of pediatric patients in need.
